Rep: Rizky Suryarandika/ Red: Nora AzizahREPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DEPOK -- Three students of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (FTUI) created quality Vegetable Capsule Shells using natural and halal ingredients in the form of Seaweed Carrageenan and Spirulina Platensis.The goal is to support the durability of the capsule so it is not easily damaged.The three students are Putri Ratna Sari (Bioprocess Technology 2015), Kanya Citta Hani Alifia (Bioprocess Technology 2015), and Daffa Ramadhan Aridis (Bioprocess Technology 2016).Read also Seaweed Capsule Shells Unair Assessed Very Potential Unair Inaugurates Teaching Industry Seaweed Capsule Shells Capsules Carrier Mission to the Moon Completed Made Putri Ratna Sari explained that this research departed from the existence of capsule drug shells made from pork gelatin which cannot be consumed by the majority of Indonesian people .For this reason, Putri and her team formulated a vegetable capsule shell as a substitute for gelatin made from the microalgae Spirulina platensis.“The manufacture of capsule shells from carrageenan and Spirulina platensis as a substitute for gelatin is considered new in the pharmaceutical world.Moreover, the microalga Spirulina platensis is abundantly available in Indonesian waters and it is a shame if it is not utilized," she said in a press release, Wednesday (21/8). Putri added that the use of S. platensis microalgae is to maintain the stability of the capsule shell in stomach acid so that the drug can be released in the intestine and does not cause irritation. In addition, S. platensis is known to contain protein and other essential substances. "So the capsule shell is not only a drug wrapper but also can function as a supplement for the body," he said. In the manufacture of capsule shells from S. platensis, the capsule shell formulation is carried out at the FTUI Bioprocess Laboratory using a capsule printer and materials that include carrageenan, glycerol, Spirulina platensis powder, and tiona. The levels of Spirulina platensis are varied to find a formulation that shows the best capsule shell test results.
